Klang Special School External CAS Session 2010

Introduction :
        
             For MARA Banting College , Sek. Khas Klang is one of the external cas venues available as part of our cas activities . This school is part of the Selangor And Federal Territory Association For Retarded Childen . The Selangor and Federal Territory Association for Retarded Children was established in 1964 as a non – profit voluntary organization . Its headquarters , Wisma Harapan is located in Kuala Lumpur . It was initiated by a group of concerned parents and voluntary workers under the sponsorship of the then Rotary Club of Klang and Port Swettenham . From a humble beginning of 4 children and 1 teacher , the Association has now expand more immensely with 12 special schools and centres catering to about more than approximately 620 children ! How great of an accomplishment can that be. 

Aim :

          The primary aim of the school is to provide education , training and care for mentally handicapped children and young adults so that they can realize their full potential.

Approach :

          The special school provides training and living skills that are needed to help these mentally handicapped and challenged children to be more independent . Other than that , The 3Rs are also taught to the extent of each child’s ability to learn. The teaching and learning programmes are individualized , systematic and structured ; conducted by special trained teachers . Parents can also participate.

Admission Procedure :

          Children which have been certified ‘ mentally handicapped ‘ by a doctor may apply for admission to these special schools or centers .

Programmes Available :

1.      Early Intervention Programme / Parents Session   
-          This programme is the earliest that a children can enter . It ranges from the age of 0 – 6 years old .
-          Relevent talks and discussion sessions are organized for the betterment of the child.
-          Parents play a huge role as at this early stage , the child tends to have amazing learning capabilities . The parents are encouraged to implement an individualized learning plan for the child.
2.      School Programme
-          It ranges from the age of 7 – 18 years old .
-          Pupils are divided into 4 levels.
-          Objective : To help children be able to cope with everyday skills through a curriculum made by the special school.
3.      Vocational Training Centre 
-          For pupils that are above 18 years of age and have completed school programme.
-          Prepares young people for work and assist in job placements.

 Activity Planning : 

                     Group A has planned to do some fund raising for their mega project at the special school. Everyone started with an early RM 50 ,whereby each of the 10 members of the group provided RM 5 each . With the money they had , they bought some items such as crisps , boxes of drinks , and some fruit tarts . As a result , they got a surplus         ( benefit ) of more or less RM 200 ++ as they used the money to make a small landscape near the side of the pool by clearing the peebles and rocks at the surface of the planned area and started to plant some seeds such as cilli and papaya . Futhermore , the group also used the money to buy some paints and brushes which has added to their cost to paint the buildings to make it look much more new and environmental friendly.

Activity Planning : 

                     A few activities was held when group B visited the Klang special school. A few of the activities were painting a small hut near the new hall. The paints were provided by the school authorities themselves so the group members only had to just execute the work given which is to colour the hut with the new colour paint. There were also some old furniture ,  document , litter and other miscellaneous items in the hut. Through the help from the male members and the workers , the mission of ‘ emptying the hut ‘ was a success. Other than that , A birthday celebration was held there on their 5th  visit. The task delegation was that , half the members were in charge of the cooking such as nuggets , sausages and other preparations while the other half was in charge of the games. The plan was a success and all the pupils were happy that day.

Activity Planning : 

                     Group C seems to be more advanced in planning as they have organized events for every visit they came to Klang special school. Some of the mega projects that the group have devised included handprinting. A white cloth has been provided by the group an with the support and cooperation by the pupils of the school , the handprinting was brilliant. Their hands got all messy with paint but , the worth of experience does not compare to it. Sports Day was held on their 5th visit there. Balls , water balloons and etc were some of the activities during that day. Last but not least , a trip to the Aquaria was the unforgettable moment. A total of 30 students from the school was selected . The cost was seemingly quite high , costing about some thousands but they were able to pull it off. An underwater adventure consisting of sharks , aquatic species , rare fishes were exploited and discovered during the venture. Who knows what the students gain , but the most important thing was , TO HAVE FUN!

Activity Planning : 

           Last but not least , group D also participated in the external Cas for Klang special school . Some of the activities that they have thought of are such as painting murals on the wall. The murals were made on the ceiling near the gate and the vocational section. The artistic ‘ state – of – the – art ‘ that they made on the walls was simply fascinating and has made the vicinity more decorated and cheerful for the students there. Likewise , this group had also did some drawing , sketching and colouring pictures. This was to ensure that the pupils can be more aware and could understand the meaning to the pictures drawed. Other activities include a feast among the teachers and students as a token of gratitude towards them and to nurture , manifest a more stronger bond between them all.
